Artist’s Statement

Imitating Adulthood explores the fleeting intensity of young adulthood and the ways young people connect with one another as they navigate what it means to be an adult. Working from candid photographs taken mostly on film, the paintings capture late nights, friendships, reckless decisions, and the social rituals that often come to define our memories of being young. By translating these images with gestural brushwork and the harsh light of a camera flash, these fleeting experiences are suspended in time, becoming artifacts of memory and nostalgia. Inspired by family photo albums, and popular media, the series reflects on the idealized image of youth and the reality of living through it.

Zoe Anthony is an emerging painter based in Regina, Saskatchewan, currently pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Regina.
