Artists’ Statement
Historically both beading and embroidery share common ties. Practiced by women whose strength has turned out many forms: from undeniable beauty, to communicative storytelling, to activism.
In this space, we stitched together. Can you hear them? The whispers of grandmothers, aunties, mothers and great grandmothers, of women and relations who laid down a foundation of beading, embroidery and applique in their practices long ago.
The artists here have responded to varying simula, from memories of childhood, to grieve, to mental health, to grappling with connections to land. They identify from a mixture of cultural backgrounds and experiences but have leaned in, to respect, practice and learn old ways, while enjoying new ways to stitch together.
