Exhibition Statement
Panoptic [pan-OP-tik], adjective: 1. Permitting the viewing of all parts or elements. 2. Considering all parts or elements; all inclusive. (Source: dictionary.com)
Firing atmospheric ceramics applies an understanding of the interplay between minerals in the clay body, flame movements, and oxygen consumption to create unique surface effects. An artist working with clay is but one collaborator in this process: the kiln itself, placement within it, the addition of organic materials – and sometimes luck itself – all factor into the final result.
This exhibition is arranged to allow viewing from multiple, “panoptic” angles, with the aim to encourage close looking and to celebrate the bespoke atmospheric effects.
