Artist’s Statement

Sheldon Brown, from Regina, Saskatchewan, is a visual artist who uses photography and video performance to explore anxiety and humour. Drawing from his experiences living with generalized anxiety disorder, Brown creates humorous scenes where he tries to hide in everyday public places—like his closet, behind a small tree, or under his studio desk, showing the tension between wanting to connect with others and the fear of doing so.

Influenced by conceptual and performance artists like John Baldessari, Bruce Nauman, and Bas Jan Ader, Brown’s work combines physical comedy with self-reflexive documentation. I Am Hiding From You explores how comedic gestures can turn personal anxiety into shared understanding that evokes empathy.
