Earth & Ember

The work presented in this exhibition explores the transformative nature of fire through four distinct ceramic firing methods: Raku, Saggar, Soda, and Wood firing. Rather than focusing solely on the construction of each ceramic piece, our intention is to highlight the firing process as an essential creative force that shapes the final outcome.

Each firing method creates its own unique environment, producing surfaces, textures, and colours that cannot be fully controlled or repeated. The interaction between clay, flame, smoke, ash, minerals, and atmosphere allows each piece to record the journey it has experienced inside the kiln. Every mark, flash of colour, and variation in texture tells the story of the firing itself.

The works in this exhibition were created by students from a wide range of disciplines at the University of Regina who were new to ceramics and/or atmospheric firing processes. Over the course of the spring semester participants created works to be fired in Raku, Saggar, Wood and Soda kilns, gaining hands-on experience and diving deeply into each firing method, its outcome, and possibilities.

Rather than emphasizing individual objects, the exhibition intends to present a survey of the four distinct firing processes and their outcomes, celebrating the transformative power of fire. Rooted in a rich history of ceramic education, the exhibition further celebrates and highlights the University of Regina Ceramics Department’s unique resources and learning environment. Most importantly, the exhibition intends to also celebrate community, as the pieces chosen for this exhibition come from all participants in the course. The course welcomed students from all disciplines and levels of experience to explore the potential of clay and atmospheric firings, which always fosters community building.
