Artist’s Statement
Featured Artists
Art, when viewed by non-artmakers, is disregarded moments after viewing and taking in a finished work. What is shown in front of them is what is assessed with a quick gaze and passed by, momentarily appreciating the completed works. For artists, viewership of artwork is not the same - what is seen is the labour in every element, every meticulous detail.
Back & Body Hurts is a cross-disciplinary celebration, and appreciation of the recognized labour that artists take on when developing, creating, and completing artworks displayed in gallery spaces. As artists curating this exhibition, we recognize the immense amount of time and dedication it takes to make works that are displayed in gallery spaces for the public to enjoy.
This recognition allows us to see these artists beyond the work that is shown in the gallery for this exhibition, but physical exertion and commitment that is put into the creation of these pieces.
The title of this exhibition is a nod to all artists that have been told how easy it must be to make art, or how those who make art do not understand physical labour – as we know these assertions to be untrue and ignorant. To be an artist is to work, and work hard - as art does not make itself, but is made with our bodies and two hands.
